Are You Buying New or a Second Hand Boat?

By Dave Zegers

What are the pro's and con's between New and secondhand?

New Boats:

With a new boat you will know the history of the boat, the interior and the engine. If something happens like: the boat leaks or there is a engine failure you will have your warranty to fall back on.When you finance a new boat, you can usually get a much better interest rate as well. Also you don't have to spent time and money on repairing or restoring a older boat. You can just sail out right after you bought your boat.

Secondhand boats:

Secondhand or used boatsboats are a great choose if this is the first time you are buying a boat and don't really know what to do with it, or when you are on a tight budget.Even when your planning on buying a new boat its best to take the first steps in a boat that did not cost you that much. Not because you would sink it because you don't have the experience as a captain yet , but maybe boating is not what you thought it would be and then you would have lost more money on a new boat then on a used boat.

Visiting boat shows is a great tool to narrow down your list with type of boats that you prefer. Also is the internet there are many websites with new and secondhand boats, take the time to do your research it can save you a lot of money or a lot of time restoring.

Happy boating.

Hints About ebay sailboat

Your boats seaworthiness can depend on the load you put in it and where you put it. Too much weight can overload your boat and cause it to become unstable or allow small waves to come aboard. It will also reduce the amount your boat can roll before its sides dip under. Weight that is carried too high will reduce stability, making your boat more apt to roll and less inclined to return to an upright position

Navigation software - what is good for use on a sailing yacht?

Mon, 13 Aug 2007 19:45:17 +0200
Hi, just a quick question - I've been looking for navigation software and found there is lots of it for sailing yachts. I came across a program called Software on Board that runs C Maps. So, I was just wondering if anyone has this and can tell me what it's like. Can anyone tell me what type of GPS antenna would be best (an internal or an external)? My boat is aluminium and I'm not sure how the signal would go through aluminium, and, is the accuracy of these units as good as each other?

Being Your Own Mechanic as owner of a sailing yacht.

Reading this sailing blog for the past few weeks makes me realize how incredibly difficult it must be to own a boat if you don't have the skills to do the mechanical work yourself. I wonder what percent of today's cruisers rely on a mechanic versus do-it-yourself?

A cruising yacht is often on passage and far away from any assistance so it is important to have some knowledge and good reference material to treat a variety of possible injuries or ailments - and have the necessary medicines and first aid dressings, etc., close to hand. You cannot carry everything but what do YOU have in your medical kit?

Hunter Class - South Africa - Official Website

8 Feb 2008 07:00:03 +0200
Hunter Boats was started in 1969, with the first "famous" boat being the NATIONAL SQUIB, designed and finished by Oliver Lee, and moulded by the Essex Boat Company. The Squib has gone on to reach national status with more than 800 on the water. In 1970, a chap named Michael Poland requested that the builder design a "lid" for the Squib, to enable him to sail it across the English Channel. As Poland's other favourite past-time was hunting, the boat was named the HUNTER 19! Oliver also designed a Squib with a lifting keel, called a TRACER, and then redesigned the Hunter 19 naming the new boat the EUROPA.
